Think of everything you love about football (soccer), and add rocket-powered cars, and you have the entertaining mania of Rocket League. There are both single-player and multiplayer modes for this game.

The setting of this game is just various fields with a goal on each side. This is, for all intents and purposes, a sports game, so it does not have much of a focus on storyline. The rules of the game are generally reminiscent of football (soccer). There is a goal on each side of the field, and each team is tasked with pushing a ball toward the other team’s goal. The twist is that players are in control of a rocket-powered car, and the ball is much bigger than the vehicles the players control. This game has a sort of demolition derby feel, so the gameplay is chaotic and fast-paced most of the time. Cars use marked areas on the field to gain speed boosts, with which they can cover great distances, hit the ball extra hard, or ram into other cars in an attempt to destroy them.

Rocket League was developed by Psyonix in 2015. This game is actually a sequel for Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars. The predecessor was not successful, and received generally negative feedback. Psyonix is an American-based video game developer that was founded in 2000 by Dave Hagewood. In may of 2019, Epic Games purchased Psyonix.

While its predecessor was a marked failure, Rocket League has been generally accepted as a resounding success. The ratings and reviews for this game have been overwhelmingly positive, especially as they compare the sequel to the original. By the end of July of 2015, Rocket League had been downloaded over five million times, and had over 179,000 regular players. Proving its success in contrast to the original, Rocket League received several awards and nominations.

  • Won Best Sports/Racing game of 2015 from The Game Awards
  • Won Control Precision and Game at The National Academy of Video Game Trade Reviewers in 2015
  • Won Original Sports at The National Academy of Video Game Trade Reviewers in 2015

Although Rocket League is already over five years old, the game is still receiving regular updates by the developers. A new patch was announced by Psyonix in February of 2020. The patch released several new and exciting items to the eSports Shop, including several new decals. The patch also fixed a few lingering bugs.

Despite the notable failure of its predecessor, Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars, Rocket League has been a resounding success. If you love high-speed games with a fun twist, Rocket League is definitely worth a try.
